The Big Write (VCOP)

A comprehensive and systematic approach to teaching writing designed to help pupils improve their standard of writing

What is Big Write VCOP?

The Big Write VCOP” by Andrell Education is a comprehensive and systematic approach to teaching writing designed to help pupils improve their standard of writing. VCOP stands for vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation. This approach emphasizes the importance of teaching writing in a meaningful and engaging way that encourages pupils to develop their writing skills through regular and sustained practice. It’s a well structured approach that makes it an ideal teaching model for children with ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ASD, for example.

The fundamental principles of the Big Write is a well researched teaching method around the writing processes, and the skills pupils need to develop to become proficient writers. The approach used by your writing tutor teaches pupils to plan, draft, revise and edit their writing, while providing them opportunities to build their vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.

One of the key features of the Big Write is the use of a structured and consistent approach to teaching writing . Your writing tutor will teach your child how to  break down the writing process into a series of clearly defined steps, that employ the ‘Gradual Release of Responsibility Model’, modeling to the student how to structure their writing. This is closely followed by guided practise, after which the child is encouraged to independently practise at home. This process allows pupils to develop a clear understanding of what is expected of them when writing and provides them with a clear framework for improving their writing skills.

Another critical aspect of the Big Write is the emphasis on regular and sustained writing practice. During sessions your writing tutor will support the student as they engage in the writing process, and will provide a range of resources to draw on. When writing, students will be offered the use of a device to clearly express their ideas, which are scaffolded and developed during weekly sessions.

Finally, Big Writing is designed to be used with recounts, narrative, persuasive and report writing genres. As children engage in the sessions they are taught by their writing tutor how to structure sentences and paragraphs and make use of text devices, such as genre specific vocabulary.

In conclusion, Big Writing is a highly effective approach to teaching writing that can help pupils improve their overall writing standard. By teaching writing in a structured and meaningful context, providing pupils with regular and sustained writing practice, and using an inclusive approach that supports pupils of all abilities, Big Writing can help pupils to develop their writing skills and build their confidence as writers.
